A long journey broken into legs is where the cost hides.
Getting to a station, waiting for it to fill, then finding something at the other end is three separate negotiations and three chances to be quoted a different number. An intercity booking is one route, one driver and one fare agreed before you leave.
- Priced on the actual distance
- The fare is calculated from the route between your two points. There is no separate long-distance tariff to negotiate at the roadside, and the number you are shown is the number you confirm.
- Door to door
- Pickup and destination are addresses, not terminals. The trip starts where you are and ends where you are going.
- Stops along the way
- Add up to eight stops to the route and each one is priced into the same quote, so collecting somebody on the way out of town is part of the booking rather than a favour asked mid-journey.
- Book it for the morning
- Long trips usually start early. Set a pickup time when you book and the search for a driver runs ten minutes before it. See scheduling.
Pricing an intercity trip
-
Enter both cities as addresses
Pick your pickup and destination from the suggestions so both ends carry real coordinates. The route, and therefore the fare, is measured between them.
-
Add any stop on the route
A stop is part of the quote, not an extra arranged with the driver later. Each one is included in the distance the fare is built from.
-
See every vehicle priced together
The options available on your route are priced at once, with seat counts. For a long trip with luggage that usually means looking past the smallest car.
-
Choose when you leave
Book it for now or set a pickup time for the morning. Either way the fare is shown before you confirm and held for ten minutes while you decide.
Pick for the hours, not just the seats
A vehicle that is fine for fifteen minutes across town is a different proposition for three hours on the highway. The seat count is shown against every option, and comfort is worth more the longer the road.
These are the ride classes currently offered. Which appear depends on your route and on what is available at the time.
- Economy
- An everyday saloon car, seating four.
- Comfort
- Newer cars with air conditioning, seating four. The usual choice for a long run.
- Premium
- Top-rated drivers in premium cars, seating four.
- XL
- Room for six and their luggage, for a family or a group travelling together.
- Okada
- A motorbike for one, and the wrong answer for intercity distance.
Someone should know where the car is
- The driver's name, photo, vehicle and number plate are shown before they arrive
- A four-digit PIN confirms the car is yours before the trip starts
- The trip can be shared with someone at either end, and the link expires by itself
- The route is followed live for the whole journey, not just the first few kilometres
- SOS and trusted contacts are available throughout the trip
Topsy currently operates across Greater Accra and the surrounding towns. An intercity quote depends on driver availability for the route you enter, so price the trip before you plan around it. The coverage pages list where Topsy runs today.
Before you book
How is an intercity fare worked out?
From the route between your pickup and destination, including any stops, on the same basis as any other Topsy trip. The quote is shown before you confirm and held for ten minutes.
Can I book the return leg too?
Book it as a second scheduled trip for the day and time you are coming back. If you make the run regularly, a repeating booking covers between two and twelve trips in one series.
Will a driver accept a trip that far?
Drivers see the job before accepting it, so a long route is offered rather than imposed. If nothing is available for your route, price it again or set a pickup time so the search runs closer to when you travel.
Can I pay for it with a company account?
Yes. Intercity travel raised on a Topsy Business account is billed to the company with a receipt behind each trip.
What if I need to stop on the way?
Add the stop when you book. Up to eight stops are priced into the same quote, so the fare already reflects them.
