Drive the car you are paying off.
A structured route from driving to vehicle ownership, with progress and repayments visible.
Rent that turns into ownership, counted properly
Plenty of arrangements in this market take money every week and leave the driver unable to say what they own. Drive-to-Own is built the other way round: every cedi is posted to a ledger, and the share of the vehicle you have earned is a number you can read today.
- You drive a vehicle from the Topsy fleet
- A vehicle is allocated to you and to nobody else. One driver, one vehicle, held that way in the system rather than by agreement.
- Every payment splits in two
- Part of what you pay reduces the balance, and part becomes equity in the vehicle. Your ownership percentage is that accumulated equity measured against the vehicle's value.
- Late fees never buy you equity
- A late fee is a penalty, not a payment towards the car, and Topsy does not let it count as one. Paying late costs you money without moving your ownership figure, which is the honest way round.
- A deposit is not the same as a down payment
- A down payment counts towards what you own from day one. A security deposit is held rather than converted, and the contract says which is which before you sign anything.
- At the end, the vehicle transfers
- When the balance reaches zero the contract moves to fully paid, and transfer produces a document recording it. If a contract ever ends in repossession after default, the equity you built is credited back to your Topsy wallet rather than kept.
From application to keys
-
Be driving with Topsy first
Drive-to-Own is attached to an existing Topsy driver account, and you apply with the email on it. If you have not registered as a driver yet, that is the first step rather than this one.
-
Submit the application and the documents
Income, how you drive, a guarantor, and three documents. They are held on Topsy's private storage rather than anywhere a stray link would reach. Only one active application runs at a time.
-
Assessment by a person
Identity, licence, affordability and guarantor are each assessed and scored, alongside a background check. A decision comes back approved or rejected with a written reason, not as a silent rejection. You can appeal a rejection twice, with your own reasoning attached.
-
Read and accept the terms
Your contract terms are written out and versioned, covering the contract value, the vehicle value, how many instalments there are, how often they fall due, the deduction method, any down payment or deposit, the late fee per day and the grace period. You accept them before any vehicle moves.
-
A vehicle is allocated
An available fleet vehicle is assigned to you, the full instalment schedule is generated, any upfront payment is posted, and the contract goes active. From that point the ledger runs.
-
You drive, and the balance falls
Repayments come out of what you earn, out of your wallet, or from a payment recorded against a reference. Your ownership percentage moves with them.
Money reaches the contract three ways
The default is automatic. When a trip completes, a repayment is taken from your Topsy earnings, capped at what you actually owe and at what is actually in your wallet. A quiet week does not create a debt you did not earn.
Every payment is applied to the oldest unpaid instalment first, and within it the late fee is cleared before the principal, so arrears do not sit quietly accruing behind newer instalments.
- From earnings
- Taken automatically after a completed trip, in the way your contract sets: a fixed daily or weekly amount, a percentage of what you earned, or a combination.
- From your wallet
- Pay any amount, any time, from the driver portal or the driver app.
- Paid elsewhere
- A payment made outside the app is recorded against its reference and posted to the same ledger.
- Late fees
- Charged per day past a due date, after the grace period in your contract. Both figures are in the terms you accepted.
- Currency
- Every instalment, payment and receipt is in Ghana cedis (GH₵).
What you can check at any hour
- The percentage you own
- Shown as a figure and a bar, alongside what you have paid, what is outstanding and what falls due next. Milestones at a quarter, a half, three quarters and the whole vehicle each arrive as a notification.
- A projected completion date
- Worked out from how fast you have actually been repaying recently, not from the original schedule. Drive more and the date moves towards you.
- Your ownership score
- Built from payment consistency, driving activity, trip completion, customer rating, vehicle condition, accident history and service compliance, with each factor shown separately rather than as one opaque number.
- Every payment, with a receipt
- The payment history lists the date, the type, the principal, any late fee and the balance afterwards. Each row has a receipt you can download as a PDF.
- The state of the contract
- Active, paused, in arrears or fully paid, named on the screen. A contract can be paused with a reason recorded rather than simply going quiet.
What the application asks for
- The email address on your Topsy driver account
- Your monthly driving income
- Whether you drive full time, part time or otherwise
- A guarantor: their name, their phone number and how you know them
- A photo or PDF of your driver licence
- A photo or PDF of your identity document
- A photo or PDF of your guarantor's document
- Your consent to identity, licence, affordability and background checks
No payment is taken when you apply. Each document can be an image or a PDF, and they are stored privately rather than on a public link.
Before you apply
Do I need to be a Topsy driver already?
Yes. The application is matched to an existing Topsy driver account by email. Register to drive first, then apply.
What does the vehicle cost?
The contract value, the vehicle value, the number of instalments and how often they fall due are set in your own terms and written out for you to accept before anything is allocated. There is no single figure, because there is no single vehicle.
What happens in a bad week?
Automatic deductions are capped at what you owe and at what is in your wallet, so a week with fewer trips takes less. Instalments still fall due on their dates, and late fees apply after the grace period in your contract, so it is worth talking to Topsy early rather than late.
Can I pay extra to finish sooner?
Yes. You can make a payment from your wallet at any time, on top of what is deducted automatically. It goes to the oldest unpaid instalment first.
What if I am rejected?
You are given the reason in writing, and you can appeal twice with your own explanation attached. An appeal is reviewed by a person.
I own vehicles rather than drive them.
Then the fleet owner route is the one to read. Drive-to-Own is one of the ways a vehicle in the fleet gets placed with a vetted driver.

Have your licence, your identity document and your guarantor's details to hand, and you can finish it in one sitting.
