Trusted contacts and SOS: what happens when you use them
Two different tools for two different situations. It helps to know which is which.
Safety features are only useful if you know what they do before you need them. Reading about SOS during an emergency is too late.
Trusted contacts
People you nominate in advance. The purpose is preparation: deciding calmly, now, who should know if something is wrong later.
Set them up when nothing is happening. Choose people who will actually answer a phone and who are in a position to do something, which is not always the same as the people you are closest to.
SOS
An immediate alert during a trip. It is for the situation where you need help now rather than for reporting something afterwards.
Using it raises the situation to Topsy's safety desk with your trip attached, meaning whoever responds can see the trip, the driver and the vehicle rather than starting from a blank page and a phone call.
What to use afterwards
Not everything is an emergency, and most problems are not. Something that felt wrong, a driver who behaved badly, a route that made no sense: these belong in a report after the trip rather than in an SOS during it.
Reports are attached to the trip, which means they can be investigated against a real record. A pattern across reports is visible in a way that a single complaint by phone is not.
Why the PIN belongs in this conversation
Most safety tooling deals with what happens during a trip. The PIN deals with whether the trip should start at all, which is the moment with the least information and the most pressure. It is the cheapest safety feature to use and among the most valuable.
The honest limit
None of this replaces judgement, and we are not going to claim otherwise. If a situation feels wrong before you get in, do not get in. A cancelled trip costs nothing before a driver is on the way, and even when it does cost something, it is not the expensive thing in that moment.
