Intercity travel in Ghana has traditionally meant getting to a station, waiting for a vehicle to fill, and then finding something at the other end. Three separate arrangements, three chances to be quoted a different number, and a departure time that depends on strangers.

An intercity Topsy trip is the same booking as any other: two addresses, one route, one fare, one driver, door to door.

The fare is measured, not tariffed

There is no separate long-distance price list to negotiate at the roadside. The route between your two points is measured and priced, the same arithmetic as a trip across town, over a longer distance. You see the number before you book.

For a genuinely long route the quote takes a moment longer to compute, because the routing is doing more work. That is normal.

Choose for the hours, not the seats

A vehicle that is perfectly fine for fifteen minutes across town is a different proposition for three hours on the highway. Air conditioning stops being a luxury. Boot space stops being theoretical.

Comfort or XL is usually the right answer for an intercity run, and the fare difference spread across a long journey is proportionally smaller than it looks on a short one.

Set the time

Long trips generally start early. Schedule the pickup rather than hoping to hail at five in the morning, and the search for your driver runs ten minutes before you need to leave. If you make the run regularly, a repeating series covers between two and twelve trips in one arrangement.

Be realistic about availability

Here is the honest part. Topsy operates across the Greater Accra Region, and a driver has to accept a long trip that takes them well outside it. Drivers see the job before accepting, so a long route is offered rather than imposed, and there will be times when nothing is available for the route you want.

Price the trip before you plan the day around it. If nothing comes back, try again closer to the time, or set a scheduled pickup so the search runs when more drivers are working.

Stops on the way

Up to eight, priced into the same quote. On an intercity run this is genuinely useful: collecting a relative on the way out of town is part of the journey rather than a negotiation at the roadside.
