Sending a parcel across Accra without a courier company

What to write on the booking so it arrives at the right desk, not the right building.

Sending something across town used to mean either taking it yourself or finding somebody going that way. Topsy Send is neither: you book a delivery the way you book a ride, and a courier from the same pool carries it.

The mechanics are simple. The details are where deliveries succeed or fail.

Describe the item honestly

The booking asks what you are sending. Answer accurately, including size. A courier arriving on a motorbike for something described as a document and presented with a crate has a wasted trip, and so do you.

If it is fragile, say so. If it needs to stay upright, say so.

Both ends need a person and a number

A delivery has a sender and a receiver, each with a name and a phone number. The receiver's number is not optional in practice: a courier who cannot reach the recipient at a large building will circle, and then you are on the phone relaying directions.

Write the instruction, not the address

The single most useful field is the note. "Reception on the ground floor, ask for accounts" turns a ten-minute search into a two-minute drop. "Third floor, the office at the end of the corridor" does the same.

A building name is where the courier stops. The note is how they finish the job.

Timing

Be ready when you book. A courier dispatched to a sender who has not packed yet is waiting unpaid, and it is the fastest way to make your deliveries less attractive to pick up.

If you need it collected later, book it later.

Tracking

The delivery is tracked, and the tracking link can be shared with the person receiving it. That link works without a Topsy account, which is what makes it useful for a customer or a relative on the other end.

When it is a business, not a favour

If you are sending regularly, look at the merchant and business pages rather than booking ad hoc. Repeat volume is better handled by an arrangement than by twenty individual bookings a week.

Put it into practice.

Every idea on this blog starts the same way: two points and a price you see before you commit.
