Paying by wallet, card, Mobile Money or cash
Four ways to settle a fare, and when each one is the sensible choice.
A fare has to be paid somehow, and the method you choose has consequences beyond preference. Here is what each actually means in practice.
Cash
The default for a great many trips in Ghana, and there is nothing wrong with it. What it costs you is change: a driver who cannot break a large note at six in the morning is a real problem, and it is your problem as much as theirs.
If you are paying cash, having something close to the fare is the single courtesy that makes the end of the trip painless.
Topsy Wallet
Money you have loaded in advance. The fare comes off the balance when you confirm, so there is no cash at the end and no card entry each time.
It suits people who travel often and who would rather top up occasionally than transact per trip. It also makes a booking for somebody else clean: the trip settles from your balance without anyone at the kerb handling money.
Card
Processed through Paystack. You are sent to Paystack to pay and the trip is created once that payment clears, which is the correct order: the trip exists because the money did, rather than the other way round.
Mobile Money
Familiar to most people reading this and, for many, the most natural option. Where it is enabled, it works the same way as card: the payment clears and the trip is created.
Which methods you actually see
Only methods that can genuinely settle are offered. If card and Mobile Money are not switched on for your account or region, the picker shows cash and wallet rather than listing options that would fail at the point of payment.
That is deliberate. A payment method that appears and then does not work is worse than one that never appeared.
Business travel
Different again: the trip is charged to the company account rather than to you, with department and cost centre attached and a single invoice at the end of the period. If you are travelling for work, that is almost always the right structure and it is worth asking your employer about.
